As part of the expansion of the Rheintalbahn between Karlsruhe and Basel into a four-track line, Weil am Rhein station will be adapted to the new route from January 2024 and converted into a pure passenger and through station. As a result of the construction work, travellers and visitors will have to adjust to changes to the tracks, routing and accessibility.

Since the beginning of 2024, Weil am Rhein station has been undergoing remodelling and adaptation to the new alignment of the line between Karlsruhe and Basel.

The Rheintalbahn between Karlsruhe and Basel is over 170 years old. Every day, more than 300 local, long-distance and freight trains use the railway line, which is therefore subject to heavy traffic. Traffic is often affected by trains travelling at different speeds. With two additional tracks, passenger and freight trains will no longer have to share the same track in future.

Weil am Rhein station has been undergoing conversion and adaptation to the new route since the beginning of 2024. On completion of the construction work at the end of 2028, it will become a pure passenger and transit station, with no additional freight traffic on site. The tracks and platforms will be reorganised and the former sidings for long goods trains will be shortened.

There will be various restrictions for travellers and visitors during the construction work. Travellers in the direction of Freiburg should note repeated changes to the route to and from the platforms. Barrier-free access will be maintained with a few exceptions. During the conversion of tracks 3, 4 and 7, travellers in the direction of Freiburg will board and alight at track 5. Trains travelling towards Basel will continue to stop at platform 8, which travellers can reach via a temporary staircase that is not barrier-free.

In addition, passengers with restricted mobility are advised to contact the Mobility Service Centre at least one working day before a planned train journey for the duration of the construction work.

They will organise assistance with boarding, changing or alighting and help with planning an alternative route. Information about the Mobility Service Centre and contact details can be found at bahn.de/barrierefrei.
