As part of UEFA EURO 2024, the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen will once again be called Arena AufSchalke, as it was when it opened in 2001. Since then, the home stadium of FC Schalke 04 has hosted the final of 2004 UEFA Champions League and several group matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This year, four European Championship matches will be played in the stadium in Gelsenkirchen:

The arena on the Berger Feld housing estate in the Erle district of Gelsenkirchen is a multi-purpose stadium that can accommodate 50,000 spectators during European Championship matches. Depending on the event, the stadium can be expanded to hold up to 70,000 spectators. The Arena AufSchalke is completely covered with membrane surfaces, the roof segments of which can be opened above the pitch. For regeneration or for protection during other events, the pitch turf can be moved out of the stadium on rails using hydraulics.
There are 32 kiosks available for catering for the fans. Payment can only be made cashless with EC, debit or credit cards as well as the traditional Knappenkarte, which FC Schalke issues to its fans. Alternatively, electronic payment via Apple Pay and Google Pay is also possible. The gastronomic highlight is the five-kilometre-long beer pipeline, which was specially developed for the Veltins-Arena and allows the beer to flow directly to the bars. The four cooling tanks in the arena catacombs have a capacity of 52,000 litres to prevent shortages during matches.

Public transport is a quick and convenient way to get to the European Championship matches in Gelsenkirchen. The feeder lines to the stadium will run at shorter intervals. Travelling by public transport is environmentally friendly and also saves you having to reserve a parking space at the stadium in advance and avoid traffic jams on the way there. In addition, a 36-hour ticket for the entire network of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) is arealdy included in the ticket price.
The declared aim of the Deutscher Fußball-Bund e. V. (DFB) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is to make the European Championship the most environmentally friendly games to date. Accordingly, travelling to the football matches by public transport is recommended. As a national partner of UEFA EURO 2024, Deutsche Bahn, among others, will be transporting fans to all 51 major events in the ten European Championship cities in an environmentally friendly way.

At UEFA EURO 2024, the <a href="https://www.bahnhof.de/en/gelsenkirchen-hbf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof</a> is the port of call for many travellers on their way to the Arena AufSchalke. The stopover at Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof is a great place to run errands. A fine selection of shops has everything you need for the rest of your journey to the stadium. There is a DB Reisezentrum (travel centre) and toilet facilities at the station. Travel provisions are available in a bistro and two bakeries as well as from various vending machines around the clock. There is a specialty shop for newspapers, magazines and books at Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof, as well as a pharmacy. From Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof take the tram line 302 to Arena AufSchalke:

<li>From the first basement level of Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof, take the line 302 in the direction of Buer and travel twelve stops to the Veltins-Arena.</li>
<li>At the Veltins-Arena stop, follow the signposted footpath to the stadium.</li>

The travel time is 16 minutes and the walk from the tram stop to the stadium takes around 5 minutes.

If you land on the tarmac at Düsseldorf Airport and would like to refresh yourself after your flight, you will find numerous cafés and restaurants at the gates and in the public area of the airport. There are also various banks, pharmacies and shops for shopping.The <a href="https://www.dus.com/-/media/dus/reisende/shoppen-und-geniessen/lageplan/lageplan_shops-und-restaurants_0424-v3.ashx">site plan of the Airport</a> shows which restaurants and shopping facilities are located where. 
The station <a href="https://www.bahnhof.de/en/duesseldorf-flughafen">Düsseldorf Flughafen</a> is located at the eastern end of the airport site. It is connected to the terminal and the airport's multi-storey car parks via SkyTrain. The driverless trains run to the station Düsseldorf Flughafen every 4 to 7 minutes. The journey time is around 5 minutes 
From the station Düsseldorf Flughafen take the RE 2 or RE 3 in combination with tram line 302 to Arena AufSchalke:

<li>At the station Düsseldorf Flughafen at track 5 take the RE2 in the direction of Osnabrück Hauptbahnhof or the RE 3 in the direction of Hamm (Westf) Hauptbahnhof and travel four stops to Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof.</li>
<li>At Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof, change to line 302 in the direction of Buer in the first basement and travel twelve stops to the stop Veltins-Arena.</li>
<li>At the Veltins-Arena stop, follow the signposted footpath to the stadium.</li>
</ul>
The travel time is 57 minutes to 1 hour and 7 minutes, the walking time from the tram stop to the stadium is around 5 minutes.
<h2 id="alternative-travel-options">Alternative travel options</h2>

The European Championship stadium can be reached by bike from Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof via two routes, both of which run through flat landscapes. Both start at the station forecourt and in Bahnhofstraße at Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof in a north-westerly direction. At the roundabout after 700 metres, the direct route leads via Alter Markt, Von-Oven-Straße and Florastraße and continues along Kurt-Schumacher-Straße. The alternative route runs along Robert-Koch-Straße, Küppersbuschstraße, Wilhelminenstraße and through Hans-Böckler-Allee to Uferstraße on the Rhine-Herne Canal. There it turns into Kurt-Schumacher-Straße at the customs office and leads directly to Rudi-Assauer-Platz in front of the arena. 
Rental bikes from <a href="https://www.gelsenkirchen.de/de/infrastruktur/verkehr/radverkehr/metropolradruhr.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Metropolrad</a>, the bike hire system in the Ruhr region, are available at the station forecourt and at the south exit of the station in Bochumer Straße. The direct route from Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof to the arena is seven kilometres long and takes around 21 minutes. The route via Uferstraße is eight kilometres long and takes around 26 minutes. Over 600 bicycle parking spaces are available on site for visitors to the arena. They are located in front of Funnel 1 and behind the East Ticket Office.
<h3 id="travelling-to-the-arena-aufschalke-by-car">Travelling to the Arena AufSchalke by car</h3>
Travelling to the European Championship match by car is not recommended by the DFB and UEFA. If you still want to drive to the Arena AufSchalke, you can reach the stadium via the A2 or the A42 motorway. On the A2 motorway, the Gelsenkirchen-Buer exit and the Herten exit lead to the stadium. From the A42 motorway, take the exits Gelsenkirchen-Zentrum or Gelsenkirchen-Schalke. The access roads are well signposted.
There are 14,000 parking spaces available on the stadium site. However, on European Championship match days, vehicles may only park in pre-booked spaces. Reservations can be made via the <a href="https://www.uefa.com/euro2024/event-guide/gelsenkirchen/stadium/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Event-Guide</a> on the UEFA website or directly at the <a href="Ticket Shop of the FC Schalke 04" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ticket Shop of the FC Schalke 04</a>.
If you want to drive to the European Championship stadium despite the increased traffic on match days, you can use a Park &#x26; Ride facility in the vicinity of the stadium. Park &#x26; Ride facilities are directly connected to the public transport network. Alternatively, the  station pages linked above also provide information about parking facilities at the station. Car park information is also available for a large number of other stations.
