We can all contribute to leaving a more liveable planet for future generations. As a company, we also recognise this ecological responsibility and want to become climate-neutral by 2040. To this end, we are focussing our efforts and activities on four areas of action: climate protection, resource conservation, nature conservation and noise protection. This also applies to the station Bitterfeld. A new station building has been under construction there since the end of October 2023. This is set to become one of the most sustainable passenger buildings in Germany. The use of recycled materials, the installation of photovoltaic systems, a green roof and the use of district heating should make the station as climate-neutral as possible. Construction work on the station building is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Travellers and visitors can look forward to a modern and climate-friendly station building at the station Bitterfeld in the future. The foundation stone for the new station building was laid in October 2023. In future, travellers and visitors will find a travel centre, a bakery with a café and a newsagent there. The building will also provide rooms for the federal police, the station mission and local transport companies. The station will also have free Wi-Fi, a packing station, public and barrier-free toilets as well as cash and ticket machines.
The special feature of the new reception building at the station Bitterfeld will be that the station will be one of the most sustainable railway stations in Germany once construction work is completed at the end of 2024. The extensive energy-efficient measures realised in the course of the renovation will create a green station. Among other things, the future façade of the station building will be made of recycled aluminium, which will save 95% of the CO₂ emissions required to produce new aluminium. Furthermore, the new roof of the station building will be equipped with a photovoltaic system, which will generate all the electricity required for the station and also feed any additional energy generated into the public power grid. The roof will also be planted with native plants. This will create a habitat for insects and other small animals while at the same time insulating the station building against the cold and heat. The new station building also uses a lot of glass. This allows more natural light to enter the interior and less lighting is required. The glass surfaces are fitted with protective glazing to protect birds. The new sustainable reception building is rounded off by a climate-efficient heat supply in the form of district heating.
The remodelling work will also include the area around the station and the forecourt. A new central bus station (ZOB), new parking spaces for cars and bicycles and new, larger lifts will improve access to the station. In future, the platforms and their roofs next to the pedestrian subway will also be modernised.
